Knee Pain

Iliotibial Band Syndrome (ITBS)

Iliotibial Band Syndrome (ITBS) is a painful inflammation of the iliotibial band, a thick band of fascia that travels from the hip down the outer side of the thigh to the knee. ITBS results in pain that can be felt along the entire course of the iliotibial band but is commonly felt on the outer side of the knee.

Iliotibial Band syndrome can be caused by overuse of the iliotibial band and is associated with activities such as running, cycling, hiking, or performing squats. The iliotibial band glides back and forth over the lateral femoral epicondyle and this constant rubbing can cause irritation and inflammation.

Treatment options may include rest, ice, stretches, physical therapy, anti-inflammatory medications, and Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP).
