Piriformis Syndrome

Piriformis Syndrome is an irritation of the sciatic nerve, a thick nerve that branches from the lumbar spine, as it travels through the buttocks and down the back of the leg, causing radiating pain or numbness and tingling along its course. The syndrome is caused by a contraction of the piriformis muscle in the buttocks region. This contraction can result from an overly tight piriformis muscle, trauma, or overuse of the muscle. Because of their close proximity, when the piriformis muscle contracts, it puts pressure on the sciatic nerve which runs just beneath it. While symptoms in the leg are common, in some cases the pain is felt only in the buttocks.

Treatment options include medications, stretches, physical therapy, steroid injections, Botox injections, and Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP).
