Coccydynia (Tailbone Pain)
Coccydynia is a common condition which is caused by inflammation of the tip of the tailbone, called the coccyx. It causes pain and tenderness in the region between the buttocks, particularly when sitting or with direct pressure. Pain is also commonly experienced with bowel movements.
Coccydynia can be caused by direct trauma such as a fall onto the buttocks, sitting for prolonged periods, or by childbirth. In many cases it may occur spontaneously where the cause unknown.
Treatment can include a seat cushion with a center cutout to relieve pressure on the coccyx, medications, physical therapy, ganglion of impar nerve block, Neural Prolotherapy, and Caudal Epidural Steroid Injection.
